INTRODUCTION
An exciting opportunity for someone who wants to build a career within an entrepreneurial and growing business and work with exceptional colleagues at the forefront of impact investing practice.
Snowball is an FCA (Financial Conduct Authority) authorised investment manager providing investors with a diversified, multi-asset, multi-manager portfolio of investments, targeting superior risk-adjusted financial returns combined with positive impact across both social equity and environmental sustainability.
We are looking for an Impact Investment Associate, who shares our passion for delivering broad and long-lasting positive Impact. We invest across both private and public asset classes, primarily through funds managed by specialist asset managers.
Example of areas where Snowball has already made impact investments include venture capital and private equity, public equities, renewable energy/infrastructure, sustainable agriculture and forestry, social and supported housing, specialist finance/credit including microfinance platforms, and social outcomes contracts.
Snowball is committed to the professional development of its team and in addition to internal development activities, actively supports employees in their pursuit of relevant external professional qualifications and affiliations such as CFA.
ROLE OVERVIEW
You will be part of a sector-leading impact investment team, working collaboratively across a range of asset classes, and will have an opportunity to take on significant responsibility.
You will engage with top-tier asset managers and analyse and develop an understanding of the attractiveness and impact potential of their asset classes and individual strategies, and of their competitive 'edge' in order to make decisions about allocating capital from the Snowball portfolio.
You will be expected to develop expertise in various sectors relevant to impact investing, for example, climate tech, energy, health or education and to contribute to Snowball’s knowledge about how best to achieve positive impact and superior financial returns from investments.
Snowball is a small and non-hierarchical team and there will be significant opportunity to work with everyone and to learn about and contribute to other areas of the business. There will also be opportunities to engage with Snowball's Advisory Council, Expert Network and Board members.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Analyse and evaluate new investment opportunities across a wide range of asset classes and impact investment strategies. These will be primarily through funds, although it is expected that co-investment and other non-fund investments will grow in the future
- Prepare Investment Committee papers facilitating decisions about these investments
- Analyse the portfolio on an ongoing basis, including performance characteristics, attribution and look-through exposures; scenario planning; and tracking of impact and other metrics (in collaboration with Operations team)
- Engage with and monitor existing asset managers
- Build up expertise in specific impact investment strategies and relevant social/environmental issues
- Custom research projects to inform Snowball’s impact investment strategy and support thought leadership
- Support the efficient management of investment team processes, through e.g. maintenance of investment pipeline tracking and monitoring of follow-up actions
- Contribute to investor reporting and communications
- Build relationships and collaborate with other forward-thinking impact investors
- Opportunity to represent Snowball externally through e.g. speaking engagements, participation in conference panels etc
- Support for business development and development of new products/target markets for Snowball
- Support enhancement of internal processes and systems, e.g. help to define/streamline processes, involvement in researching, specifying and implementing tools and data services (from 3rd parties or internally-developed)
REQUIREMENTS
- 4+ years of professional experience in or related to investment. Experience in private markets asset classes or multi-asset class allocation/manager selection is particularly valuable, but not essential if you have a strong interest in how multi-asset class portfolios are managed
- Intellectual curiosity and ability to understand a wide range of different impact investment strategies and asset classes at the fundamental level, the evaluation of investment managers, and the construction and management of a portfolio
- Clear interest in social equity and/or environmental sustainability
- Strong collaboration and project management skills
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in written documents and presentations
- Flexible and willing attitude with a proactive, self-starting approach
- Strong spreadsheet and data handling/analysis skills
- UK work permission
Nice to have:
- Private markets experience
- Experience of multi-asset class portfolios and manager selection
- Prior impact investing experience
- Expertise in spreadsheet automation/coding
- Experience with investor/client meetings and communication, and with business development
