Sizing the opportunity.

Sep 01 2021 · 2 minute read

The climate and inequality emergencies are not opportunities. The innovation that goes into solving for them however generates opportunity; opportunity to prove that it is possible to invest money positively whilst making a sound financial return so that in the future all investments are made with consideration for people and planet.

Impact investors believe our role is to address these social challenges we face head on, by making investments that take account of all stakeholders. At Snowball, we believe this can be achieved in a systemic way by delivering risk-adjusted market returns. We target returns of 6-7%, net of all fees.

In our “Get to know our portfolio” feature, we recently told you about our investments in Capital Dynamics (clean energy) and Aqua-Spark (aquaculture). We take a brief look at the size of the markets in these areas in which we see growth that will meet key areas of need for solution design to address the climate challenges we face.

The size of the opportunity— clean energy. The global renewable energy market was valued at $928.0 billion in 2017, and is expected to reach $1,512.3 billion by 2025, registering a CAGR of 6.1% from 2018 to 2025¹.

The size of the opportunity— aquaculture. The global aquaculture market was US$9 billion in the year 2020, and is projected to reach a revised size of US$245.2 billion by 2027, growing at a CAGR of 4.4% over the analysis period 2020–2027².
